Hot Mess Express

from Last Light by Steve Terry Project

/

about

"Hot Mess Express” by Steve Terry Project is a high-energy, improv-heavy jazz instrumental. Inspired by 70s funk and fusion, this song delivers a heavy dose of saxophone, synthesizer, and organ as it blazes through its structure of dramatic peaks and valleys. Written during a caffeinated drive across Georgia and South Carolina, Terry found himself humming the bass line and finding connection in its repetitive nature coinciding with the endless nothingness of scenery. The horn line represents the start and stop nature mirroring breaks in the trees or a new landmark approaching. The track is also heavily influenced by the Grant Green standard “Jan Jan,” as Terry recalls having just performed it at an open jam prior to recording “Hot Mess Express.”
